Definition

Chain-of-thought (CoT) is a prompting technique that instructs a large language model to decompose complex problems into explicit intermediate reasoning steps before arriving at a final answer. Instead of asking the model to jump directly to a conclusion, the prompt encourages or demonstrates step-by-step reasoning, which has been shown to significantly improve performance on tasks involving logic, math, multi-step reasoning, and complex analysis.

The technique can be implemented in two ways: zero-shot CoT, where the prompt simply includes an instruction like "think step by step," or few-shot CoT, where the prompt includes examples that demonstrate the desired reasoning process.
