What This Template Does

Shipping AI features without an ethics review is like shipping software without security review -- it works fine until it does not, and by then the damage is done. AI products can discriminate against protected groups, violate user privacy in non-obvious ways, erode trust through opaque decision-making, and cause downstream harms that product teams never anticipated. These are not hypothetical risks. They happen regularly to companies of all sizes.

This template provides a structured ethics review process designed for product teams, not academic researchers. It is practical, actionable, and focused on the decisions product managers actually need to make. Each section includes specific questions to answer, risks to assess, and mitigations to implement. Use it as a pre-launch gate for any AI feature, and revisit it quarterly for AI features already in production.

How to Use This Template

  • Fill out Section 1 (Product Overview) first to establish context. The impact level classification drives how thorough the remaining sections need to be. Low-impact features need lighter review; high-impact features need comprehensive assessment.
  • Conduct the Fairness Assessment (Section 2) with data from your evaluation suite. Do not guess whether bias exists -- measure it. If you do not have demographic performance data, that is a finding in itself.
  • Review Transparency (Section 3) from the user's perspective. Ask someone unfamiliar with the product to use the AI feature and tell you what they understand about how it works. Their confusion reveals transparency gaps.
  • Involve your legal team in Sections 4 and 5. Privacy and accountability have regulatory implications that product teams may not be aware of. Get legal review before finalizing.
  • Do not skip Section 6 (Societal Impact) even if it feels abstract. Regulators, journalists, and users increasingly ask about broader impacts. Having documented, thoughtful answers builds trust.
