Agile Release Trains (ARTs) are a key Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) component. They provide an effective and safe way to deliver value to customers quickly while allowing flexibility. An ART is a long-lived, self-managing Agile team that incrementally delivers value through a series of Program Increments (PIs). Each PI is a timeboxed planning period of 8-12 weeks where the ART delivers a tested, integrated, and potentially releasable product increment. The ART is responsible for organizing and executing the PI, including defining the PI objectives, planning requirements and design, and coordinating and executing the development activities. The ART is facilitated by a Release Train Engineer (RTE) who is responsible for helping the ART to stay on track and adhere to the Agile values and principles. The RTE also ensures that the ART’s activities align with the organization’s strategic goals.
